Pet Urn Size Guide

By Morylane Journal, the Morylane brand editorial team.

Before choosing a pet urn, ask your cremation provider what needs to fit. Compare that answer with the urn's usable interior capacity, opening and closure. Height and width tell you how it will sit on a shelf, not whether it can hold the returned contents.

Use this pet urn size guide to gather the measurements and instructions you need. A pet's weight alone is not a guaranteed capacity calculation.

Ask the cremation provider what needs to fit

Ask the provider what material and packaging will be returned and what capacity the intended container needs. If there is an existing sealed bag or container, ask whether it should remain intact and whether the proposed urn can accommodate it.

Do not open or transfer the contents simply to measure them when you do not have clear instructions.

Weight charts may be useful starting points, but they are not an exact result. Dignity Pet Crematorium's Tribute Heart listing explicitly describes its weight ranges as a guide. That provider's ranges do not establish the capacity of a Morylane item.

Understand internal capacity and outer dimensions

Internal capacity describes space inside the urn. Outer dimensions describe the size of the object on a shelf or in another location. Wall thickness, shape, lining and inserts can make those different questions.

Conceptual illustration, not to scale. It shows separate fit questions, not a package guaranteed to pass through an opening.

Compare the required capacity with the stated usable interior volume. Check that the units match. A figure in cubic inches and a figure in milliliters need to be compared consistently; do not treat unlike numbers as equivalent.

If the listing does not explain whether an insert or lining reduces usable space, ask. Do not estimate the interior from a product photograph.

Check the packaging, opening and closure

Imagine that a listing gives enough usable interior volume, but your provider returns an intact package wider than the opening. The volume figure alone would not settle that fit question. Compare the opening, interior shape and packaging separately; this is a hypothetical example, not a product measurement.

Ask the seller whether the provider's existing package can fit while staying intact. Ask the provider for guidance if compatibility is unclear.

Also check how the actual closure works. A decorative lid does not by itself establish a seal, and a closure that is intended for one final assembly may not be suitable for repeated opening. Follow the instructions for that exact product.

Decide between a full-size urn and a keepsake

A full-size urn is intended to hold all of the material you plan to place in it. A keepsake urn may hold only a portion, with the rest kept elsewhere.

Decide which purpose you need before comparing sizes. Confirm the intended use and documented capacity of each candidate; labels such as "small" or "large" are not measurements.

For a wearable keepsake portion, read the pet cremation jewelry guide. A jewelry chamber is a separate product type, not a substitute for an urn intended to hold everything.

Use this comparison checklist

Bring the same questions to every candidate:

Check Information to confirm
Planned contents All of the returned material or a selected portion?
Required capacity What does the cremation provider advise for the actual return?
Usable interior volume What volume is documented, and in which units?
Existing packaging Can it remain intact and fit inside?
Opening Will the intact package pass through?
Closure What instructions and restrictions apply?
Display position Do the outside dimensions suit the location?

Record unanswered questions rather than filling the gaps with assumptions. The table is a comparison aid, not a size calculator.

If the listing only gives outside measurements

A short inquiry can make the missing information clear:

"What is the usable internal capacity of this urn, and does that figure allow for any lining or insert? My provider will return an intact package. What opening and interior measurements should we compare before choosing?"

Share the provider's relevant measurements, not photographs of private documents or the contents.

The Pet Urns, Dog Urns and Cat Urns pages provide category starting points. A dog or cat label is not a capacity guarantee. You can also explore the ceramic, metal and wooden urn collections; compare the actual listing, not the material category, for size and fit.
